Korea is a country that rapidly adapts to change. Our parents and ancestors, who lived through the Japanese colonial era and the Korean War, transformed a nation on the brink of ruin into a thriving country. During those times, survival was the priority, leaving little room to contemplate the national identity of ‘Korea’.
Today, numerous K-pop artists and Korean films are achieving remarkable success globally. This success is often attributed to the power of Korean culture. However, defining what that entails can be challenging, especially as traditional Korean forms have visually evolved to align with Western standards. Despite these changes, Korea’s unique spirit persists and is passed down through generations.
I strive to embody this enduring spirit in my work. Drawing from the zest for life that our ancestors possessed, I aim to capture the narratives of contemporary Koreans in my work with humor and insight. In an era marked by escalating conflicts, my goal is to foster harmony through my art.
Silver Kim is an artist whose work explores the boundaries of normal and abnormal. She works primarily in glass, but also incorporates numerous other materials like wood, metal, and found objects, and media such as video. In a series of works, she has built dining-related scenes that focus on interaction with the object and
audience, taking ordinary functional items outside of their ordinary context. Silver has received scholarships from Hongik University, Corning Museum of Glass, and Arrowmont School of Art and Craft. She holds a BFA in metal art and design, woodworking and furniture design, and ceramic and glass at Hongik University, Republic of Korea. Silver is currently working at Pittsburgh Glass Center.
